Did you know that Ipswich Lutheran Church has a history rooted in community and faith? It began with German immigrants settling in the Ipswich area in the 1850s. These immigrants were of the Lutheran faith. They sought a place to worship in their native language.

Initially these settlers gathered at the Ipswich Wesleyan Church. Services were held in German. This was because many had limited English.

Let’s go back to 1862. The government granted land to the Lutherans. This allowed them to build their own church. By 1864, the first St John’s Lutheran Church was erected on the corner of Roderick and Nicholas Streets. It was a small brick building.

Imagine the dedication of that first church. It was a testament to the community’s commitment. They had a place to call their own. Pastor C. F. A. Schirmeister played a crucial role. Based in North Brisbane he travelled to Ipswich. He also served congregations in Toowoomba and Brisbane.

In 1866, Pastor E. Heiner arrived from Germany. He became the congregation’s first resident minister. He provided consistent leadership. A new manse was built in 1929. It replaced the original one.

As the congregation grew they needed more space. In 1941 a new Sunday School and Parish hall were dedicated. This offered room for activities.

By the 1950s, it was clear a new church building was needed. In 1958, the decision was made to construct a new church. The congregation celebrated its centenary in 1960 as construction began. The original St John’s Church was demolished in 1961. A valedictory service was held among its ruins. Services moved to the Church Hall during construction.

In 1961 the new St John’s Church opened. It was built of brick and faced Roderick Street. A tall spire topped the tower. It featured an illuminated aluminum cross.

Today, Ipswich Lutheran Church continues to evolve. It has multiple locations including Bethany and Raceview. It is a unified community.

The church’s mission is to know Christ. It also aims to make Christ known. They achieve this through various ministries. They also partner with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Myanmar. Reverend Roelof Buitendag helps the church embrace change.

Ipswich Lutheran Church is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to faith and community. The church welcomes everyone to join in worship. Its history is a rich tapestry. It connects generations of believers.
