Seven meters tall and weighing ten tons a majestic bronze horse stands before us. This is Leonardo’s Horse a magnificent equine sculpture at the Ippodromo del Galoppo in Milan.

The Ippodromo del Galoppo isn’t just a racetrack. It’s a significant part of Milan’s history and culture. For over a century it has hosted some of the most prestigious horse races in the world. Legendary thoroughbreds like Ribot and Falbrav have thundered across its tracks. Famous jockeys like Frankie Dettori have ridden here.

The Ippodromo boasts several different types of tracks. There are tracks for level races hurdle races steeple-chases and even cross-country races. Races here range from 1000 meters to a remarkable 5000 meters for obstacle races.

But the story of the Ippodromo del Galoppo goes beyond the races. The impressive Leonardo’s Horse is a testament to this. This colossal bronze sculpture was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s original sketches. It’s one of the largest equine bronze sculptures in the world.

The original design for this statue dates back to 1482. Ludovico il Moro commissioned it to honor his father Francesco. Leonardo’s initial vision was ambitious. He envisioned a rearing horse poised to attack enemies. This proved too difficult to execute. He later created a revised model. The horse now rested on three legs. Even this version was huge more than seven meters tall and planned to weigh 100 tons.

The project was unfortunately interrupted by war. The bronze intended for the statue was used for cannons. The clay model was destroyed. The project was resurrected centuries later thanks to the efforts of Charles Dent an American pilot and art collector. He established the Leonardo da Vinci’s Horse Foundation. After fifteen years of fundraising he managed to secure the funding to finally realize Leonardo’s dream. Dent sadly passed away before seeing it completed. But the project was taken over and completed by Frederik Meijer the owner of a supermarket chain in Michigan. The final sculpture was then gifted to Milan.

The Ippodromo del Galoppo became its home. In September 1999 the colossal statue was unveiled. Today it stands as a breathtaking symbol of perseverance and artistic ambition. It’s a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of Leonardo da Vinci and the rich history of this magnificent racetrack. The Ippodromo del Galoppo is more than just a place for races. It’s a cultural landmark a living testament to Milan’s past and a vibrant part of its present.
