Why is it called Inui Gate? We are standing at the Inui Gomon Gate. This gate, with its distinctive tiled roof and four-legged structure, is a beautiful example of the koraimon architectural style. It wasn’t always here in Kyoto Gyoen. In the Edo period, the Inui Gate stood as a grand entrance to the nobles’ residential area. During the Meiji era, it was moved to its current location as part of a preservation project. The name “Inui” refers to the northwest direction in the ancient Japanese zodiac. This gate, facing northwest, once guarded a sprawling residential area that bustled with the lives of Kyoto’s elite. Imagine the processions of samurai, the elegant carriages of court ladies, and the comings and goings of important officials, all passing beneath the watchful gaze of Inui Gate.
