Seven churches. One building. The International Community Church in Boston is more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to collaboration and shared faith. The ICC’s story begins in 1998. It was born from the union of Brighton Avenue Baptist Church and New Life Church. Brighton Avenue Baptist, founded in 1853, had seen its heyday come and go. By the late 1990s, the congregation dwindled. Meanwhile, New Life Church, part of a new wave of church plants, thrived on inclusivity. They invited other communities to share their space. Facing financial difficulties, Brighton Avenue Baptist and New Life Church merged. They formed the International Community Church. This new entity embraced the spirit of sharing.

The International Community Church became the host church in its Gordon Street building. Six other autonomous churches joined them. Each church operates independently. They sign yearly covenants with the ICC. These covenants outline shared expenses and room usage. The ICC bears the majority of the costs. The other churches contribute what they can. This unique arrangement has just two cardinal rules: children must be accompanied by adults, and violence is strictly forbidden. A multi-colored magnetic calendar in the lobby orchestrates the weekly ballet of services and events. Pastors and representatives meet regularly. They offer updates and prayer requests, fostering a spirit of unity. While each church holds separate worship services, they gather several times a year for joint services and fellowship.

The International Community Church building itself has a story to tell. Built in 1930, this three-story structure has hardwood floors and a labyrinth of rooms and hallways. The main floor bustles with activity. The auditorium, sanctuary, “little chapel,” and children’s room are shared spaces. Upstairs, each church has a small office and storage. The basement level houses a dining room, various activity rooms, and even living quarters for a resident who provides security and maintenance. Sundays are a vibrant tapestry of worship. About 250 worshippers from the seven congregations fill the building. Three churches rotate through the common spaces at any given time. The ICC also hosts Sunday school, monthly potlucks, and a weekly candlelight service. Their annual “After-Supper Bible Camp” is a highlight for the children.

Beyond Sunday services, the International Community Church extends its reach into the community. It offers space to organizations like Parents Helping Parents and the Boston Faith and Justice Network. Small groups gather for Bible study and fellowship. The Rock Concert Ministry draws thousands of teens and young adults to drug and alcohol-free shows. The ICC also supports missionaries abroad and helps reunite immigrant children with their families. They offer assistance to political refugees navigating the immigration process. The International Community Church’s story is one of shared faith. It’s a microcosm of Boston’s diverse religious landscape. A place where seven distinct congregations create a harmonious whole. It’s a reminder that sometimes, sharing a space means building a community.
