Established in 1970 the International Buddhist Meditation Center in Los Angeles holds a special place in Buddhist history. It wasn’t just another temple. It was a beacon. A pioneering center founded by Ven Dr Thich Thien-An a respected Zen Master from Vietnam. He arrived in the United States as a UCLA professor. His students encouraged him to create a space for meditation and Buddhist practice in Los Angeles. The International Buddhist Meditation Center answered that call.

This wasn’t just any meditation center. It was one of only four original Zen centers in the United States specifically designed for Western practitioners. Imagine the courage it took to establish such a center in a culture unfamiliar with its practices. Ven Dr Thich Thien-An and his followers helped shape an American style of Buddhism. The center’s innovative approach is reflected in its legacy. More than ten other temples trace their origins back to this very location. Monks trained here before branching out to establish their own centers. Their influence spread far and wide.

Tragically Dr Thien-An passed away in 1980. Ven Dr Karuna Dharma one of the center’s founders stepped up as Abbess. She brought a strong female voice to the leadership. Under her guidance the International Buddhist Meditation Center continued its important work. The center’s impact is immeasurable. The International Buddhist Meditation Center played a vital role in ordaining Westerners as bhikkhus and bhikkunis. This was groundbreaking. In December 1994 it hosted a grand ordination ceremony. It was the first of its kind in the United States. The ceremony was presided over by a woman. It marked a turning point for Western Buddhist disciples of Asian masters.

Today the International Buddhist Meditation Center continues its mission. While it no longer trains new monks nuns or Dharma teachers its influence is enduring. It remains a place of refuge offering ceremonies and solace to the community. Weddings funerals and blessings are performed. The center’s legacy is far-reaching. It exemplifies the power of cross-cultural exchange and spiritual growth. Standing here you can feel the weight of its history the strength of its spirit. This isn’t just a building. It is a living testament to perseverance adaptability and the enduring power of faith.
