Can you imagine a city’s lifeblood flowing from a distant loch? Here at the Interaction with Water, artist Gemma Coyle and the Yoker community have captured that essence. The artwork reminds us of Glasgow’s intimate connection with water, a relationship stretching back over 150 years. Glasgow draws its lifeblood from Loch Katrine, nestled approximately 35 miles northwest in the Trossachs. Two Victorian aqueducts, driven solely by gravity, deliver around 230 million litres of water daily to the city. The Interaction with Water symbolizes this constant flow, this lifeline from loch to city. While Loch Katrine’s water is naturally pure, Glasgow doesn’t take chances. The water undergoes a rigorous six-stage treatment process. First, screens filter out larger debris like leaves and twigs. Then, aeration removes unpleasant smells and carbon dioxide. Next, a coagulant binds fine particles and bacteria, forming a removable scum. Filtration further refines the water before disinfection. Chlorine, a century-old disinfectant, effectively eliminates harmful bacteria. Finally, pH levels are balanced to prevent pipe corrosion and ensure palatable tap water. The Interaction with Water reminds us that while water is essential for life, it is also a source of inspiration and community connection. It reflects the city’s ingenuity and its enduring partnership with the natural world.
