How about a journey back to 1950? It was then that two congregations, First Baptist Church of Melvindale and First Baptist Church of Allen Park, decided to unite. This marked the beginning of Inter-City Baptist Church.

Dr. William R. Rice led this newly formed church. His leadership set the stage for growth and expansion. Over time, Inter-City Baptist Church broadened its ministries. These ministries would eventually include a Christian school and a seminary.

Inter-City Baptist Church stands firm. It stays true to its heritage. It remains an independent, fundamental Baptist church. Today, Dr. David M. Doran guides the church as its current pastor.

Now, let’s talk about Inter-City Baptist School. It is a vital part of the church’s ministry. The school was incorporated in 1966. It operates as a non-profit organization. Inter-City Baptist School was a pioneering institution. It was among the first Christian schools of its kind in Michigan.

Dr. William R. Rice also directed the school. In its early days, the school had eight faculty members. Approximately 100 students were enrolled in grades K through 8. The school quickly grew. Within three years, it expanded to include grades 9 through 12. The first class of seniors graduated in 1970. A new high school building was constructed that same year. It featured ten classrooms, a library, a science lab, and a gymnasium.

For over five decades, Inter-City Baptist School has been in operation. It is known for its established curriculum and leadership. New schools in the Midwest often seek its advice. The school is well-regarded in the Detroit area. It has a reputation for academic excellence and spiritual emphasis in both public and private sectors.

More than 1,200 students have graduated from the high school. Over 90% of these graduates have gone on to attend colleges and universities nationwide. Graduates have excelled in various professions and ministries.

Inter-City Baptist School has a clear mission. It assists parents in educating young people. These young people should be mature Christians. Their character and conduct should reflect Christ. They should bring glory to God.

The school believes education involves the whole student. This includes spiritual, academic, social, physical, and musical development. Ideally, home, school, and church should work together. This collaboration helps raise children well.

Inter-City Baptist Church also founded Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Rice envisioned a seminary committed to expository preaching. He wanted a seminary focused on practical local church ministry.

Detroit Baptist Divinity School opened in 1976. It started with thirty students and five faculty members. Classes were initially held at the church. A new seminary building was dedicated across the street in 1979. That same year, the seminary gained state approval. It began offering M.Div. and Th.M. degrees. It then officially became Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary.

Dr. Rice served as DBTS president for 13 years. In 1989, Dr. David Doran became senior pastor of Inter-City Baptist Church. He also took on the role of leader of the seminary board.

Today, Inter-City Baptist Church continues its mission. It strives to serve Christ. It seeks to impact the world through its church, school, and seminary.
