It was known as Sub-Division 5 of the General Staff Division. Its primary mission was to train Special Branch personnel. It also trained personnel from other units in intelligence operations.
As threats to internal security grew, so did the need for a more robust intelligence unit. The Special Branch recognized this need. They highlighted the importance of developing and enhancing the capabilities of intelligence officers. Sub-Division 5 was then upgraded. It became the Intelligence Development Center.
The Intelligence Development Center Special Branch had clear goals. These included enhancing efficiency in intelligence operations. It also aimed to provide security to important people and places. The center sought strong cooperation. This cooperation extended to domestic and international units. All of this was done to stabilize national security.
The U.S. Government played a vital role in the Intelligence Development Center’s development. They offered excellent cooperation. They financially assisted in building the center’s infrastructure. The Intelligence Development Center is located on a 30-rais Royal estate. This is in Tungsonghong Sub-District, Laksi District, Bangkok. The U.S. Government also furnished it with necessary equipment. The total aid amounted to approximately 2.5 million USD.
The ceremony of laying the prime construction stone was held on September 19, 2006. The official inauguration was scheduled for November 17, 2007. This date marked the 75th anniversary of the Special Branch Establishment.
The Intelligence Development Center Special Branch also engages in training exercises. In June 2018, the DSI and LIFT International jointly organized a 4-day training course. This course focused on physical surveillance. It was for 32 officials. These officials came from the DSI, the Royal Thai Police, and the Department of Provincial Administration. The training aimed to develop the capacity of Thai law enforcement officers. It facilitated exchanging experience between trainees and trainers. It also strengthened the working network. This aligns with the government’s policy. This policy focuses on integrating work between government agencies.
The trainers in this course included experts. They had experience from New Zealand law enforcement agencies. Their expertise spanned investigation, surveillance, and informant development and management.
