Established in 1984 the Instituto Universitário de Ciências da Saúde Escola Superior de Saúde do Vale do Sousa boasts a rich history. Initially known as the Instituto Superior de Ciências Dentárias do Porto it focused on dentistry. This was a response to Portugal’s need for specialized dental training.
The Instituto Universitário de Ciências da Saúde Escola Superior de Saúde do Vale do Sousa wasn’t content with just dentistry. It expanded its offerings. New courses in clinical psychology and pharmaceutical sciences emerged. In 1993 a name change reflected this growth. It became the Instituto Superior de Ciências da Saúde Norte.
Growth continued. Modern facilities including teaching spaces laboratories and university clinics were established. These are located on the Gandra Paredes campus. A doctoral program in applied biological sciences further enhanced its prestige. This program was renamed to Biomedical Sciences in 2015. The same year the institution became the Instituto Universitário de Ciências da Saúde IUCS.
A ministerial decree in 2022 brought another name change. It is now the Instituto Universitário de Ciências da Saúde-CESPU IUCS-CESPU. A significant development was the 2024 inauguration of the Paredes University Veterinary Hospital. This facility directly benefits the clinical training of veterinary medicine students.
