Did you know that the Instituto Tecnológico de Cancún started as a module of another institution? It began as part of the Instituto Tecnológico de Chetumal. This was back on October 4, 1984. The classes were held at CBTIS 111.
Now, we stand before the Instituto Tecnológico de Cancún. It officially began operations here on September 22, 1986. The location is Avenida Kabah Km 3. The land covers 18 hectares. There is also a 3-hectare site in Puerto Juárez. It was for the Industrial Fishing Engineering program.
Pedro Joaquín Coldwell was the Governor of Quintana Roo then. Dr. Manuel V. Ortega O. was the Undersecretary of Technological Education and Research. They inaugurated the courses together. Other education officials attended too. The courses were for the September 1986 to January 1987 period. Since its beginning, the Instituto Tecnológico de Cancún has embraced technological and social changes.
Initially, the Instituto Tecnológico de Cancún offered three programs. Industrial Fishing Engineering had 20 students. Electromechanical Engineering had 36 students. Hotel Administration had 186 students. That made a total of 242 students.
From 1986 to 1990, the Instituto Tecnológico de Cancún used a four-month term system. In 1991, it switched to semesters. In September-December 1991, new programs appeared. These were Computer Science and Accounting. Industrial Fishing Engineering closed due to low demand.
The shift from four-month terms to semesters made things easier for students. It also improved administrative operations. The Instituto Tecnológico de Cancún adapted its study plans. This was part of an educational modernization program. The goal was to align higher education with the needs of the job market. It also aimed to meet the demand for quality education.
