Founded in 1962 by Antonio Augusto Goncalves Rodrigues the Instituto Superior de Linguas e Administracao ISLA stands as a testament to ambition. It was Portugal’s first private higher education institution. Imagine the boldness of such a venture.
The ISLA’s founding was a personal investment by Rodrigues a member of the Portuguese Republic’s Assembly. He saw a need for skilled professionals. Existing universities lacked practical training in modern languages and business. Rodrigues aimed to fill this gap.
Initially the ISLA offered courses through several schools. The Superior School of Translators and Interpreters trained professionals for international communication. The Superior School of Secretarial Studies focused on business administration. A third school offered courses in scientific work organization and industrial psychology. This was forward-thinking for its time.
Entrance required a completed secondary education. A preparatory course was available for students lacking the necessary qualifications. This demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity.
Over time the ISLA expanded. Institutes opened in Santarem in 1984 Braganca in 1985 Vila Nova de Gaia in 1989 and Leiria in 1990. This reflects the growing demand for private higher education in Portugal.
The 1990s and early 2000s were a period of relative stability. However the global financial crisis of 2005 caused administrative separation of the ISLA institutes. The Lisbon campus became the European University part of a worldwide network. Other campuses were acquired by the Lusofona Group after 2012.
Today these institutes continue to operate. Their teaching methods have changed significantly. The original ISLA in Lisbon is now the European University. The Santarem Braganca Gaia and Leiria campuses are now specialized institutes focusing on management and administration.
The ISLA legacy is one of innovation. Its founder’s vision ensured that generations of Portuguese professionals were equipped with the tools to succeed in a rapidly changing world. Rodrigues’ dedication shaped the landscape of higher education in Portugal forever. The Instituto Superior de Linguas e Administracao ISLA’s history is one of growth adaptation and enduring impact.
