In 2018, Paulo Moreira Architectures restored an old warehouse that had been abandoned for decades. This revitalization project gave birth to Instituto do Design. It became an interdisciplinary extension of their architectural practice.
Today, Tamanho Azul – Associação manages Instituto do Design. This team is responsible for the project’s founding and consolidation.
Since its opening in December 2018, Instituto do Design has been a hub of activity. It organizes talks, exhibitions, workshops, and publications. These events draw individuals and collectives from various disciplines. They come from both national and international backgrounds.
Instituto do Design’s location on Rua dos Clérigos is ideal. It is close to the city’s main landmarks. It is located in a bustling downtown area with excellent public transport links. This accessibility has led to increased activity and public attendance.
The program at Instituto do Design has garnered recognition from several institutions. They have collaborated on projects with Ágora – Cultura e Desporto and Empresa Municipal do Porto. They also work with Bolsa de Ideias – Associação Comercial do Porto. ARQ OUT – Mês da Arquitetura and Ordem dos Arquitectos – Secção Regional do Norte are further collaborators. The Porto Design Biennale also participates.
The team behind Instituto do Design is led by Artistic Director Paulo Moreira. Sara Pinheiro serves as the Studio & Project Manager. Nuno Silva provides Production & Technical support. Ivo Tavares captures the essence of the space through photography.
