Imagine walking through Hauz Khas Enclave right opposite the metro station. Here stands the Institute of Home Economics, a girls’ college of Delhi University.

Founded in 1961 by Dr. S. Malhan the Institute of Home Economics sought to broaden educational and professional paths for women. It quickly became a leading center for women’s education in India. Since 1969 the Institute of Home Economics has been a constituent college of Delhi University.

Initially offering a two-year diploma in Home Science the institute expanded its academic programs. Now it includes undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. There are even postgraduate diplomas and Ph.D. programs available at the Institute of Home Economics.

Let’s talk courses. The Institute of Home Economics offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Home Science and Food Technology. You can also pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. Elementary Education, Microbiology, and Biochemistry degrees are also available. Postgraduate programs include Fabric and Apparel Sciences and Foods and Nutrition. The Institute of Home Economics also offers diplomas in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition and Health and Social Gerontology.

Looking for short-term programs? The Institute of Home Economics has courses in Nutrition for Health Sports and Fitness. There is also Early Childhood Care and Education. You can learn Management of Individual and Emotional Well-being and Event Management plus AUTOCAD and Interior Designing. Radio Jockeying and Computer-Aided Designing courses are offered. A doctorate degree in Home Science is also an option.

The Institute of Home Economics moved to this 3.5-acre campus in 2001. President Giani Zail Singh laid the foundation stone in 1987. Prof. Deepak Nayyar the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University inaugurated the building.

Notice the manicured lawns spacious lecture theaters and well-equipped laboratories. The Institute of Home Economics attracts students from Asia and Africa. Currently about 800 students attend.

The Institute of Home Economics boasts a highly qualified and experienced faculty. They contribute significantly to research recognized globally. Faculty members actively participate in national and international conferences.

According to the NIRF ranking 2022 IHE ranks 75th in the colleges category. The Institute of Home Economics offers placement opportunities through its society Eminence. Many companies participate in the placement fair held every year.

Societies play a big role in student life here at the Institute of Home Economics. There are many clubs promoting physical and mental well-being. Eleganza is the Western Dance Society. Tarkaas is the Indian Music Society. Navrang is the theatre society. Iridescence focuses on Fine Arts and Photography. Poise is the fashion society. Muzahira is the Literary and Debating society. Enthusia promotes sports.

The Institute of Home Economics provides a conducive environment for learning and growth. It is easy to interact with the faculty and staff. The college is conveniently located near the Hauz Khas metro station. The Sarvpriya Vihar bus stand is also nearby.
