Established in 2001 the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology stands before you a testament to China’s scientific advancement. This isn’t just a building it’s a hub of innovation. A place where breakthroughs in crop genomics and regenerative medicine are born.
The IGDB is a merger of three prestigious institutes. The Institute of Genetics the Institute of Developmental Biology and the Shijiazhuang Institute of Agricultural Modernization. This powerful combination created a powerhouse of research. Nearly 90 principal investigators lead a team of over 360 researchers and technical staff. Their work focuses on plant and animal models. They tackle critical issues like food security and human health. They even address China’s significant water scarcity challenges.
Imagine the dedication of these scientists. Their tireless work contributes to new wheat rice soybean and corn cultivars. These new breeds have an estimated value of 1.8 billion US dollars. Think of the impact on the Chinese food supply. Think of feeding over a billion people.
The Institute boasts five research centers. These centers cover genome biology molecular agrobiology developmental biology molecular systems biology and agro-resources. Three state key laboratories further enhance its capabilities. These include the State Key Laboratory of Plant Genomics the State Key Laboratory of Plant Cell and Chromosome Engineering and the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Developmental Biology.
The Institute’s achievements are staggering. Its research has been featured as a National or International Top Ten Scientific Breakthrough by Science magazine. No less than six times. It has also received nineteen major national awards and ninety provincial awards. The IGDB’s impact extends beyond China. It collaborates with institutions and universities worldwide. It works towards global food security and sustainable healthcare.
In 2018 the IGDB helped establish the College of Advanced Agricultural Sciences. This is at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. It’s also involved in creating the Innovative Academy for Seed Design. This ambitious project includes members from nineteen other CAS institutes. The aim is to bolster China’s national seed industry.
The IGDB is more than just a research institution. It’s a symbol of China’s commitment to scientific progress. A place where cutting-edge research improves the lives of millions. It is a testament to dedication innovation and global collaboration. As we stand here we are witnessing the future unfolding. A future shaped by the tireless work within these walls.
