Hidden within the University of Macau, the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) holds a secret. It’s a place where ancient wisdom meets cutting-edge science. The Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences isn’t just a building. It’s a bridge between the past and the future of medicine. Founded in 2002, the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences had a humble beginning. It started in an old dormitory on the University of Macau’s old campus. Can you imagine the researchers working diligently in those converted dorm rooms? Their determination laid the foundation for what the ICMS is today. The Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences has always focused on the “standardization, internationalization, and modernization of Chinese medicine”. This vision, established by the founding director, Professor Wang Yitao, has guided the institute’s research and teaching. In 2010, a milestone was reached. The Ministry of Science and Technology approved the establishment of the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine (SKL-QRCM) within the ICMS. This was the first state key laboratory in Chinese medicine in the entire country. The SKL-QRCM’s mission is to create a world-class platform for quality research in Chinese medicine and R&D of innovative products. The laboratory has been instrumental in setting quality standards for over 20 Chinese medicinal herbs, recognized by publications like the United States Pharmacopeia and the European Pharmacopoeia. The Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences has achieved remarkable success. It has published over 3,000 articles in SCI-indexed journals and filed 140 patents. One of its research projects even won a second prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award. The ICMS has developed innovative products. One example is a series of innovative Chinese herbal products that won a gold award at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva. This was a first for a Chinese medicine product from Macao. The Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences also aims to nurture talent. It has produced over 800 graduates, many of whom hold senior positions in universities, pharmaceutical companies, and hospitals worldwide. Some have even started their own biotechnology companies. The ICMS also plays a vital role in the community, offering educational activities about Chinese medicine, reaching over 30,000 people. It bridges the gap between traditional practices and modern science. The Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences continues to seek innovation through tradition, contributing to a healthier future for all.
