Here stands the Institut für Sport und Sportwissenschaft. It’s more than just a building. It’s a hub of athletic study and development at TU Dortmund.
The Institut für Sport und Sportwissenschaft is part of Faculty 16. That faculty is known as “Art and Sport Sciences.” The institute is mid-sized. It has seven working groups. Three focus on natural sciences. The other four emphasize social sciences.
Let’s break down these areas. First, there’s Sport Medicine. Next, we have Training and Movement Science. Then comes School and Education, or Sports Didactics. After that, we find Education and Development, known as Sports Pedagogy. Moving on, there is Development and Learning, also called Sports Psychology. Then, there’s Culture and Society, or Sports Sociology. Finally, we have Data Analysis in Sports Science.
The Institut für Sport und Sportwissenschaft focuses on training qualified sports teachers. It is also known for its school sports research. The institute exclusively offers teacher training programs. Dortmund is one of the few places in North Rhine-Westphalia to offer all teaching degree programs in sports.
These programs include teaching at grammar and comprehensive schools. There are programs for vocational colleges and secondary schools. Primary school programs are available too. These include sport as a major subject. There are also programs for special needs education. Currently, about 1,000 students are enrolled in sports programs here at the Institut für Sport und Sportwissenschaft.
Dr. Marcus Schmidt is based here at the Institut für Sportwissenschaft. He serves as Deputy Speaker for the German Sports Science Association Athletics Commission. You can reach him here if you need to.
To get here, remember that the TU Dortmund campus is near the Dortmund West interchange. This is where the A45 and B1/A40 cross. You can take the S-Bahn to Dortmund University station. Or use bus lines 445, 447, or 462. The H-Bahn, a suspended train, also stops here.
The institute itself is located at Otto-Hahn-Str. 3. This address is home to the future of sports education. The Institut für Sport und Sportwissenschaft continues to shape how sports are taught.
