Is it possible for a building to whisper secrets of the past? Here at the Institut de Médecine Légale in Lille, it feels like the very walls hold stories. This institute is not just a place of science. It is a repository of history and a crucial part of the city’s fabric.

The Institut de Médecine Légale’s story began on July 3, 1933. It was then that the first stone was laid. The vision was ambitious. The goal was to create an institute unique in France for its scope and design. It was initially called the Institut de Médecine Légale et de Médecine Sociale. The building brought together three distinct fields. These were legal medicine, social medicine, and stomatology. Its location was carefully chosen. It was placed near the old Porte de Valenciennes, the student residence, and the fluid mechanics institute.

The original Institut Médico-Légale was comprehensive. It housed research labs and an aseptic operating room. There was also a photography service and a toxicology research unit. A technical police service, a museum, and a library were included. Of course, there was a refrigerated morgue, a mortuary depot, and an autopsy room. Located on 3 boulevard Painlevé in Lille, the institute also featured consultation rooms. These rooms were for medical and gynecological exams. A radiology service, a career guidance center, and an amphitheater completed the picture.

The Institut de Médecine Légale et de Médecine Sociale was officially established by decree on December 29, 1934. It was signed by the President of the French Republic. It became an institute of the University. The Second World War brought devastation. Bombings in May 1944, aimed at the nearby Lille Fives train station, severely damaged the building. The wing housing the stomatology institute was destroyed.

In 1960, the stomatology institute was rebuilt. It was moved to the Lille University Hospital campus. The architectural similarity between the two buildings is still noticeable. The Institut de Stomatologie was renamed the Abel Caumartin Center upon its inauguration in 1965.

In 2004, the original 1933 building was demolished. This happened during the Euralille II district restructuring. Its yellow brick facade was reminiscent of the Calmette Hospital.

Today, the new Institut Médico-Légal stands within the CHU de Lille. Its address is rue André Verhaeghe. The new mortuary at the CHU was inaugurated on December 16, 2002. The building combines the CHU’s central mortuary with the Institut de Médecine Légale et Sociale.

The field of legal medicine plays a critical role. It identifies the cause of death through medical examination. Legal medical experts use different methods to determine the cause of death. The institute includes autopsy rooms and an anatomical pathology room. There is also a forensic science room. Three laboratories specialize in toxicology, legal medicine, anthropology, and entomology. A lecture hall serves its university purpose. The legal medicine consultation service at Roger Salengro Hospital receives violence victims daily.

The ULR7367, located on the first floor of the Institut de Médecine Légale, supports research activities. An odontology lab has equipment for preparing bone and dental pieces. Imaging techniques like radiography aid comparative identification. An anthropology lab allows in-depth tissue analysis. It uses photography, optical microscopy, and 3D digitization. The biochemistry lab provides resources for sample analysis. A sample preparation room is vital for initial specimen processing. A meeting room and library encourage discussion among researchers and students. A classroom supports specialized training. A seals room ensures the security of medico-legal evidence.

The Institut de Médecine Légale also houses a Centre Universitaire d’Anatomie. It features a dissection room and an amphitheater. These are key facilities for anatomy teaching and dissection techniques.

Finally, the institute is linked to the Centre de don du corps à la science. This allows people to donate their bodies for medical advancement. It is a generous act to progress knowledge.

The Institut de Médecine Légale continues to evolve. It adapts to meet modern challenges. It remains a vital institution for justice and medical progress. As we leave, consider the weight of the history. Think about the dedication of professionals working to uncover the truth.
