Was this entire neighborhood built because of a trolley? In essence, yes! Inman Park, Atlanta’s first planned suburb, was the brainchild of Joel Hurt. Hurt, a civil engineer and real estate developer, envisioned a peaceful haven away from the city’s hustle and bustle in the late 1880s. His vision involved connecting this sanctuary to the heart of Atlanta using a novel mode of transportation: the electric streetcar. This ambition led to the creation of Atlanta’s first electric streetcar line along Edgewood Avenue. The area that would become Inman Park, spanning over 130 acres east of the city, was acquired and developed by the East Atlanta Land Company. Hurt decided to name this new suburb “Inman Park” after his friend and business associate, Samuel M. Inman. To bring his grand vision to life, Hurt enlisted the expertise of landscape architect Joseph Forsyth Johnson. Johnson’s plan incorporated winding streets and numerous green spaces. This design philosophy stood in stark contrast to the grid-like layouts common in many cities at the time, giving Inman Park a distinctive and appealing character. Inman Park wasn’t just a residential area; it was conceived as a vibrant community.
