IGIDR was registered as an autonomous society in November 1986. It was further established as a public trust in January 1987. The Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research campus was inaugurated on December 28 1987. The late Shri Rajiv Gandhi then Prime Minister of India presided over the event.

This was done in agreement with Bombay University. Recognizing the growing need for development economists IGIDR started its own Ph.D. program in 1995. A Master’s program soon followed.

Students and staff enjoy various recreational facilities. These include a swimming pool tennis court and badminton court. There is also a gym jogging track and children’s park.
