How about an institution dedicated to understanding India’s developmental challenges? That’s the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research or IGIDR for short. This advanced research and educational institution stands in Mumbai.

The Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research’s story began with a vision. Professors Jyoti and Kirit Parikh dreamt of an institution focused on India’s unique developmental issues. Their idea found support with funding from the Reserve Bank of India.

IGIDR was registered as an autonomous society in November 1986. It was further established as a public trust in January 1987. The Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research campus was inaugurated on December 28 1987. The late Shri Rajiv Gandhi then Prime Minister of India presided over the event.

Initially, the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research focused solely on research. In 1990, it expanded its horizons by launching a Ph.D. program in development studies. This was done in agreement with Bombay University. Recognizing the growing need for development economists IGIDR started its own Ph.D. program in 1995. A Master’s program soon followed.

Today the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research is known for its multidisciplinary approach. It tackles developmental issues using economics, energy studies and environmental policy. IGIDR’s mission is to provide insights into development processes and policy options. The Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research also aims to disseminate knowledge.

IGIDR is located on a 14-acre campus in Goregaon East. The design of the campus draws inspiration from the art of the Elephanta and Jogeshwari caves. The campus includes offices seminar rooms and a 500-seat auditorium. There is also a library a computer center and a cafeteria. A guest house accommodates visiting scholars.

Students and staff enjoy various recreational facilities. These include a swimming pool tennis court and badminton court. There is also a gym jogging track and children’s park.

The Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research offers several programs. The M.Sc. in Economics is a two-year program. It provides training in economics with emphasis on analytical and problem-solving skills. The Ph.D. program trains researchers and professionals in policy analysis. IGIDR also has programs for visiting scholars and post-doctoral fellowships.

The Reserve Bank of India plays a key role in the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research’s management. The Governor of the Reserve Bank of India serves as the chairman. The current director is Dr. Basanta Kumar Pradhan.

The Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research continues to evolve. It contributes significantly to India’s development discourse through research education and outreach. IGIDR remains committed to addressing India’s developmental challenges.
