“Triveni” a structure of three. That’s how the India International Centre describes itself. Standing before this iconic Delhi landmark you might wonder what those three pillars are.
The India International Centre isn’t just a building. It’s a vibrant hub a meeting place for minds. Founded in 1962 its history is rich with intellectual and cultural exchange. Its foundation stone was laid by Japanese Prince Akihito. Inaugurated by India’s second President S Radhakrishnan it has grown to be a place of global significance.
Those three pillars? They represent three streams of activity. The Intellectual Stream. This is fueled by a well-stocked library. Seminars symposia meetings and discussions are constantly held here. The IIC Quarterly an internationally known journal is published here too. Then there’s the Cultural Stream. This bursts with dance and music recitals exhibitions film screenings and theatre performances. Finally the Social Stream. This one brings people together. Think of the hostel and the catering facilities. A truly social space.
The India International Centre has hosted some incredible figures. The Dalai Lama Kofi Annan Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Even Salman Rushdie and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have graced its halls. Imagine the conversations the ideas the collaborations that have taken place within these walls.
Designed by Joseph Allen Stein the main complex and its annex are architectural marvels. They’re so significant that the area is nicknamed Steinabad. The Centre’s Gandhi-King Plaza named after two giants of peace is another highlight.
But the India International Centre hasn’t been without its challenges. The refusal of Lalu Prasad Yadav’s membership caused some controversy. It even led to the resignation of a Life Trustee. This highlights the complexities and sometimes political nature of even the most intellectual spaces.
