Founded in 1961 by J Welles Henderson the museum started as a humble collection. Henderson a passionate maritime collector was frustrated. Philadelphia lacked a dedicated maritime museum. He sought to rectify this oversight. He initially housed his personal collection in a rented space.

The museum’s journey was remarkable. It moved several times. It eventually settled at Penn’s Landing in 1995. This involved a significant 15 million dollar renovation. The museum was renamed the Independence Seaport Museum. A fitting tribute to Philadelphia’s role in American independence.

But the story doesn’t end there. The museum faced challenges. In 2007 former president John S Carter was convicted of embezzlement. This dealt a blow to the institution. The museum however persevered. It bounced back reaffirming its commitment to preserving Philadelphia’s maritime heritage.

Today the Independence Seaport Museum boasts impressive holdings. This includes two National Historic Landmark ships. The USS Olympia a cruiser that served as Admiral Dewey’s flagship during the Battle of Manila Bay. And the USS Becuna a World War II submarine. Both ships offer unique tours and insights into naval history.

The museum also houses the J Welles Henderson Research Center. This impressive archive contains a wealth of material. It includes rare books ship plans photographs and more. It documents the Delaware River’s history from early America to the present.

Beyond its ships and archives the museum offers diverse programming. This includes exhibits educational programs and workshops. These programs explore various aspects of maritime history and the Delaware River’s ecology. The museum truly captures the spirit of Philadelphia’s maritime legacy.
