Beyond the surface, lies a crucial guardian of Malaysia’s environment: Indah Water Konsortium. This is no ordinary company. Indah Water is Malaysia’s national sewerage company. It shoulders the vital task of maintaining efficient sewerage systems for all Malaysians.

Let’s rewind to 1994. The Federal Government entrusted Indah Water with a nationwide sewerage service concession. Before that, local authorities handled these duties. This marked a turning point. Indah Water stepped in to modernize the infrastructure.

Imagine the complex network beneath our feet. Indah Water operates and maintains over 7,000 sewage treatment plants. Around 20,000 km of underground sewage pipelines crisscross the landscape. This massive undertaking serves more than 25 million people.

Indah Water’s commitment goes beyond infrastructure. It ensures wastewater is treated before it flows back into our rivers and seas. This protects public health and preserves our precious water resources. It contributes significantly to a cleaner, healthier environment.

In June 2000, the government took a significant step. The Minister of Finance Incorporated acquired full ownership of Indah Water. This move underscored the government’s commitment to efficient sewerage management.

Indah Water also shares its expertise internationally. Through the IWK 2020 Transformation Plan, it collaborates with other Asian countries. This plan focuses on human capital development, innovation, automation and technology.

Indah Water celebrated its 25th anniversary in December 2019. A special book “Indah Water Spurring the Nation” commemorated this milestone. It highlighted the company’s contributions to the country.

In January 2021, Indah Water expanded its services to Kelantan. This further solidified its role as the national sewerage provider. Indah Water’s dedication has earned it numerous accolades.

In 2023, the Global Water Awards recognized Indah Water as the Public Water Agency of the Year. These awards reflect Indah Water’s commitment to sustainability. Indah Water won the Malaysia Outstanding Water Award for Research in 2024.

Indah Water continuously strives for improvement. It embraces innovation and invests in its workforce. This ensures it remains at the forefront of wastewater management. Next time you turn on the tap, remember the unseen work of Indah Water. It plays a vital role in safeguarding our environment. It ensures a cleaner and healthier Malaysia for generations to come.
