Established in 1881 Incarnate Word High School stands proudly. It’s a testament to the unwavering dedication of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. These remarkable women answered a desperate call during a cholera outbreak in Galveston. They arrived from France bringing compassion and a commitment to education. Their legacy lives on within these walls.

Incarnate Word High School’s story is one of growth and adaptation. It began humbly as a small schoolhouse for girls on Avenue D. It later blossomed into St Patrick’s Academy. This served as a crucial precursor to the high school we see today. The sisters’ vision expanded. In 1897 they purchased 283 acres of land. This land included the springs that feed the San Antonio River. Imagine the foresight.

Their new convent opened in 1900. Just 21 students filled the classrooms in that first term. The school awarded its first high school diplomas in 1903. By 1910 it had even awarded its first bachelor’s degree. Growth continued necessitating a separate high school building. This was constructed in 1950 on Mount Erin. This $1 million building was quite something for its time. It boasted classrooms a residence hall for 150 girls and a gymnasium.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1978. The Texas Highway Department built US 281. This unfortunately separated the high school from the college. However the sisters cleverly insisted on a Sky Bridge. This ingenious solution kept the campuses connected. It shows their commitment to unity and the students’ well-being.

Incarnate Word High School remains a beacon for young women. It offers a rich academic experience rooted in its Catholic heritage. It’s a place where tradition and innovation coexist. The school has adapted to the changing times. It maintains its commitment to providing a high-quality education. The school’s story is one of perseverance. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and education. It’s a story worth remembering. A legacy that continues to inspire generations of young women. Walk these hallowed halls and feel the weight of history. Feel the promise of the future.
