Imagine stepping back in time to 1873 Houston. The Incarnate Word Convent stands tall on Crawford Street, a testament to faith and education. This beautiful building is the oldest permanent Catholic school in the city. The story of the convent begins with the arrival of three sisters from Lyon, France, Mother Jeanne de Matel and her companions. They were invited by Bishop John Odin to establish a school for young women. The sisters took up residence in a former Franciscan Monastery across the street from St. Vincent’s Church. The sisters’ arrival is celebrated each year on Foundation Day. The convent, originally called Incarnate Word Academy for Young Ladies, continues to serve the Houston community, providing a quality education to generations of young women. It’s a place where faith, learning, and community come together.
