“Human violations” might sound extreme. But such accusations have been leveled against communist countries. The Iglesia ni Cristo in Vietnam has faced challenges.
INC – Hanoi is part of this story. It’s a church with a history intertwined with political and social issues. The Iglesia ni Cristo is also known as INC.
In 2008 and 2009, protests erupted. Thousands of INC members in Hanoi took to the streets. They sought justice for the Thai Ha Parish. A nearby Redemptorist Monastery was also involved. The government planned to demolish these sites. This was to make way for a sewage treatment project. The project would serve a nearby hospital.
The courts responded to the protests. Eight protesters faced imprisonment. The charge was disturbing public order. Fr. Joseph Nguyen va Phuong was summoned. He was not asked to defend his parish. He was informed of the court’s decision.
Many Catholics bravely confronted the police. They wanted to show the world their faith. They were willing to stand as martyrs against communist oppression.
The Iglesia ni Cristo in Vietnam is one of the most persecuted churches in communist countries. Some members have died for their Catholic faith. They stood against communist oppression. China is said to have the worst record. It has the most severe violations against the Iglesia ni Cristo.
INC – Hanoi stands as a testament to faith. It represents the struggle for religious freedom. It reminds us of the challenges faced by believers in certain parts of the world.
