Imun Railway Bridge

Across the sprawling metropolis of Seoul, where history intertwines with modernity, lies the Imun Railway Bridge. It watched as coal depots fueled the city’s growth in the 1960s. Later, it observed the decline of the coal industry and the rise of the railway vehicle base. The Imun Railway Bridge saw the area transition into a desolate no man’s land, a forgotten edge of the urban sprawl. Then, a vision emerged to revitalize the area. A new type of subway station, a socio-cultural garden platform, was proposed. The Imun Railway Bridge became a link between the past and the future. The project sought to acknowledge the repressed history of the Imun area. It aimed to create a connection between this forgotten edge and the vibrant heart of Seoul. The concrete terrain, a symbol of the area’s industrial past, was intentionally “ruined.” The transformation allowed local area patterns to extend onto the site. Programs were rearranged. The once-covered ground became an open land, fostering horizontal connectivity with the surrounding areas. Above and below, modified sectional spaces offered new programs, addressing the social and cultural demands of the local community. The Imun Railway Bridge became a part of this revitalized landscape. It connected the different areas, weaving them into a unified whole. The site evolved into a metro-station park, a harmonious blend of railway station and urban green space. This innovative infrastructure, built on the ground, transformed the community into an open platform. New programs emerged, drawing inspiration from the area’s past. An energy research institute, a rare botanical garden, and a coal museum found their home in the upper and lower sections of the ground. These programs presented a dialectical image of the site’s memory, offering a fresh perspective on the Imun area and fostering a renewed sense of community. The Imun Railway Bridge remains, a quiet observer of this transformation, a testament to the area’s resilience and its journey from a forgotten edge to a vibrant community hub.
