What if these walls could talk? The Imperial Continental in Kabul has seen decades of history unfold within them.

The Imperial Continental, formerly known as the Intercontinental Hotel, stands as a landmark. It is in the Karte Parwan neighborhood. This five-star hotel became Afghanistan’s first international luxury hotel in 1969.

Imagine Zahir Shah, opening the hotel with pride. It was built in cooperation with the Intercontinental Hotel network. The English company Taylor Woodrow Construction Company did the construction.

For years, the Imperial Continental was a hub for foreigners. It was near the Bagh-e Bala Palace. The hotel boasted 200 rooms. Guests enjoyed a swimming pool, sports club, and tennis playground. Two restaurants, a coffee shop, and six halls provided ample space. These halls hosted formal and informal gatherings.

However, the hotel’s story is not without its darker chapters. Following Russia’s military intervention, the hotel faced challenges. Intercontinental Hotels Global took back privileges in 1980. During the civil war in the 1990s, paramilitary forces damaged the Imperial Continental. By 1996, only 85 rooms were habitable. Western journalists flocked here during the US attacks in 2001. It was the only large hotel still operating.

The Imperial Continental underwent renovations to restore its former glory. It aimed to provide five-star services again. From 2005 to 2007, part of the hotel became office space. The Senlis Council, later ICSD, occupied the fifth floor.

The 2018 attack inflicted huge financial losses. Foreign agencies avoided the Imperial Continental. The Marketing Directorate of the Hotel Barceló aimed to restore confidence. They suggested a reliable security company survey the hotel and implement a security system.

Today, the Imperial Continental strives to be Afghanistan’s best 5-star hotel. Their mission is to provide top-notch services. They want to be the best place for meetings and business. They also hope to host memorable weddings.

The Imperial Continental offers various services. These include rooms, restaurants, and a coffee shop. There is also a swimming pool and fitness gym. Conference and banquet halls cater to different events. The hotel provides laundry and a business center.

The Imperial Continental’s vision is clear. They aim to upgrade to seven stars. They focus on quality, fast, and clean services. The hotel wants to offer high international standards to Kabul citizens, all of Afghanistan, and foreign guests.

The Imperial Continental has achieved much. It has signed memorandums with government and private organizations. The Ministry of Information and Culture recognized it in the hotel sector.

The Imperial Continental actively seeks feedback. They want to improve their services. At the end of each program, guests share their opinions.

So, as you stand here, remember the Imperial Continental’s rich history. This hotel reflects Afghanistan’s journey through conflict and resilience. It continues to serve as a beacon in Kabul.
