The Beijing Guozijian, located on Guozijian Street, served as China’s national university during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. It was the final Guozijian, holding a unique place in China’s educational history. The majority of the buildings you would have seen standing here were constructed during the Ming dynasty. The Imperial College educated students, called “Jiansheng”, primarily in the Confucian classics. Even emperors themselves would visit, reading aloud to thousands of students. Can you picture that grand scene? Imagine the emperor, surrounded by scholars and the eager faces of students, all within these historic walls. The Imperial College wasn’t just a center for learning; it was a symbol of imperial power and the importance of education. The college’s layout was carefully designed, reflecting traditional Chinese beliefs. The complex faces south, with the Jixian Gate as the main entrance, followed by the Taixue Gate and a magnificent glazed archway. Deeper within stood the Biyong, Yiluntang, and Jingyiting. This central axis was flanked by halls and palaces, creating a symmetrical and harmonious design. The location of the Imperial College also held significance. Situated near the Confucius Temple and the Yonghegong Temple, it formed a hub of culture and spirituality. The Imperial College wasn’t isolated; it was part of a larger intellectual and spiritual landscape. While the Imperial College closed in 1905, its legacy continues.
