Tucked away in the Wazemmes district of Lille, France, lies a hidden gem called Impasse Vilain. This isn’t your typical street. It’s a small courtyard, a last vestige of a working-class past. Impasse Vilain persists amidst the urban expansion of Rue Léon Gambetta. This unique urban form reflects the industrial development of northern France during the first half of the 19th century. Impasse Vilain stands as a piece of the region’s architectural heritage. Impasse Vilain gained its current form in the early 20th century. Nineteen individual houses were built facing each other, enclosing a shared outdoor space: the courtyard. This arrangement makes Impasse Vilain unique in Lille. It’s the only courtyard that still exists in its original configuration, with a master’s house overlooking eleven workers’ houses. In 1870, the master’s house transformed into a secular primary school for boys. This initiative aimed to combat illiteracy in this very working-class neighborhood. The school building had a specific layout. The ground floor housed two classrooms, a kitchen, a small inner courtyard, and the headmaster’s office. Two covered playgrounds occupied the space where the houses now stand. The latrines, still visible at the beginning and end of the Impasse, remind us of the school’s past. The first floor contained two more classrooms, while the second floor served as storage. Impasse Vilain, more than just a street or a courtyard, embodies the history of Lille. It whispers tales of industrial growth, social struggles, and the fight against illiteracy. It offers a glimpse into a bygone era, a time when master and worker lived side by side. This unique urban space serves as a poignant reminder of Lille’s rich and layered past.
