Hidden among agave plants and behind an orange fence stands Immemorial to Spiraling Ecologies of East LA. This isn’t just any artwork. It’s a testament to East LA’s rich history. Created by the Mapache City Project artists Sandra de la Loza and Arturo Romo. The installation originally stood on a hillside. It consisted of three 6-foot-tall limestone panels.
Immemorial to Spiraling Ecologies of East LA was installed in 2014. The artists chose this location to honor the area’s social cultural and ecological histories. Unfortunately vandalism forced its relocation. Gang tagging repeatedly damaged the panels. The constant cleaning threatened the artwork’s integrity. So the decision was made to remove the panels.
The artwork was carefully removed. Experts will clean and restore the panels. This process will take about a month. Then Immemorial to Spiraling Ecologies of East LA will find a new home. It will be displayed between the East Los Angeles Library and Belvedere Lake. This new location at the East LA Civic Center will ensure its protection. It will remain a celebration of the area’s vibrant past and present.
