Amidst the bustling suburbs of West Covina in 1954 Immanuel First Lutheran Church began its journey. It was a time of rapid growth. Dwight Eisenhower was president. Televisions showed Lucy and Ricky. West Covina transformed from a farming community into a booming suburb. It was one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. The Immanuel First Lutheran Church story began humbly. Twenty-two Lutherans held their first services in Mean’s mortuary chapel. They chose the name Immanuel meaning God is with us. They were the first Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod congregation in the city.
Eight months later the church purchased six acres of land. This land was on Walnut Grove Avenue near Walnut Creek. Construction of the original chapel started soon after. Young families formed a school in 1957. The school and its later preschool served the community for over 50 years. Immanuel First Lutheran Church continued to grow. A larger sanctuary was built in 1970. It could seat 300 people. The original chapel became a fellowship hall with Sunday school rooms and a kitchen. In 2006 the church created a new parking lot. They leased it to the East Valley Community Health Center. This earned them a West Covina City Beautification award.
The church adapted to the changing times. In 2020 Immanuel First expanded its ministry online. They offered online worship to homebound members travelers and visitors. West Covina continues to change. The 10 freeway runs through the heart of the city. There is an Edwards Theater a Westfield shopping center a large hospital and many restaurants and parks. Yet the spiritual needs of the community remain. Immanuel First Lutheran Church continues its mission. Their mission is to share God’s love comfort and hope with all. This year they celebrate their 70th anniversary. They are refurbishing their facilities for future generations. Immanuel First Lutheran Church stands as a testament to faith community and enduring love. It is a vital part of the West Covina landscape.
