Did you know the Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ boasts a weather vane rooster? This isn’t just any rooster. It’s a symbol of the church’s enduring spirit. It has watched over the congregation for decades. This magnificent church stands proudly in Koreatown Los Angeles.

Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith. It’s a place where history whispers through stained glass and echoes in the pipes of its three magnificent organs. Founded in 1888 the church moved to its current Wilshire Boulevard location. The current structure was completed in 1929. The beautiful building was designed by the prominent Los Angeles architect Chauncey Fitch Skilling.

The church’s history is rich. It began as a small congregation. Nineteen charter members signed its constitution. Descendants of many of these original members still attend services today. The original frame building was known as the “Rooster Church”. The weather vane rooster remains a cherished symbol. It now rests in the refurbished archive room. The church bell still rings on Sunday mornings. Louis Behle rescued it from a fire. He delivered it to the church in a hay wagon.

The church’s architecture is striking. The 205-foot tall corner tower is breathtaking. The stained glass windows are exquisite. They feature traditional designs by Dixon Art Glass. There are also more contemporary designs by Judson Studios. The three organs are exceptional. The 1927 EM Skinner organ is a masterpiece. The 1977 Hradetzky tracker action instrument is another highlight. The 1956 Schlicker organ is the first three-manual Schlicker organ installed in Southern California.

Immanuel’s journey is a tapestry woven with faith community and perseverance. It faced challenges. The first parsonage burned down in 1929. A new one was built the same year. The current church building cost $60,000 when built in 1929. The church’s Reuters Pipe Organ cost $40,000. It was a generous gift from the Henry J. Bangert family. Immanuel’s history is one of adaptation and growth. The church changed its name in 1962 to reflect the merger of the Evangelical and Reformed Church with the Congregational Christian Churches.

This church is more than just a building. It’s a community. It is a living legacy. It’s a place where generations of faith have come together. It’s a place where the spirit of community flourishes and the sound of the church bell continues to call people to worship. Step inside Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ.
