Gazing up at the elegant facade of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, one might wonder about the stories it holds. The Immaculate Heart of Mary Church stands as a testament to the faith of the Catholic community in Scarsdale. It began not within these grand walls, but in a humble firehouse on Sprague Road. In 1912, a mere 39 Catholic families in Scarsdale yearned for a spiritual home of their own. They no longer wanted to travel to White Plains for Mass at the Church of St. John the Evangelist. Their plea reached Cardinal John Murphy Farley, the Archbishop of New York, who granted their wish. The Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish was officially established on December 20, 1912. The first Mass, held in the firehouse, took place on January 5, 1913, marking the beginning of a new chapter. Just a few months later, in August 1913, construction began on the English Gothic church we see today. The church became a focal point, its stunning architecture a reflection of the community’s devotion. The parish, having cleared its construction debt, then embarked on another important mission. They established a parochial school to further nurture the community’s faith and education. In the 1940s, Our Lady’s Chapel was added to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Originally intended for daily Mass, it later became a sanctuary for perpetual Eucharistic adoration, deepening the spiritual life of the parish.
