Here, before us stands a testament to faith and community. This is the Immaculate Conception Church in Manhattan. Established in 1855, the parish initially met in a humble carpenter’s shop. Irish and Italian immigrants were the first members. They settled on the East Side.

Imagine Archbishop John Hughes in Rome. He stood near Pope Pius IX. The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception was declared. It was December 8, 1854. Hughes vowed to build a church. It would honor the event upon his return to New York.

Just one year later, the cornerstone was laid. By May 1858, the beautiful Romanesque Immaculate Conception Church was dedicated. Hughes declared it the first church to honor the Mother of Christ’s immaculate nature.

Rev. William P. Morrogh established the parish school. It opened in 1864. The Sisters of Charity of New York staffed it. The Christian Brothers arrived in 1880. They took over instruction for the boys.

By 1875, under Monsignor John Edwards, Immaculate Conception was the city’s largest parish. Archbishop Michael Corrigan consecrated the church in 1887. Congressman Francis Barretto Spinola’s funeral was held here in 1891.

Msgr. William G. Murphy took over in 1906. Immaculate Conception remained one of the largest parishes. However, over the decades, the number of parishioners declined. Many moved to other parts of the city. The original church building was demolished in the 1940s. This was to make way for Stuyvesant Town.

In 1943, the parish acquired the chapel and hospital buildings. Barney and Chapman designed these buildings. They were completed in 1896 for Grace Church.

Eggers & Higgins expanded the facility. They added a four-story brick convent and parochial school. The cost was 700,000 dollars. It was completed in 1945.

Above the church door is a small statue. It is of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This statue came from the first Immaculate Conception Church. Her expression is pensive. What is she thinking? Is she calling to those who passed beneath her feet?

The Immaculate Conception Church and Clergy Houses were designated a New York City landmark in 1966. They were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The Immaculate Conception Church stands as a symbol of faith. It also represents community resilience.
