Standing tall on the Mishima Plain, the Imashirozuka Kofun Tumulus, a keyhole-shaped monument from the Kofun period, stands as a poignant testament to the ancient power of the Yamato regime. It is said that this impressive tumulus, the largest in the Yodo River basin, played a crucial role in the imperial court’s rise to prominence.

The tumulus was built in the early 6th century, believed to be the resting place of Emperor Keitai, the 26th emperor of Japan. This mighty structure stretches 350 meters long and 340 meters wide, including the double moat that surrounds it. While it has not been officially sanctioned by the Imperial Household Agency, the theory that Imashirozuka is Emperor Keitai’s tomb is supported by the structure’s shape, the haniwa discovered on site, and supporting historical documents.

The Imashirozuka Kofun Tumulus is a true treasure of Japanese history. It is a reminder of the power and influence of the Yamato dynasty, and it provides a glimpse into the beliefs and rituals of ancient Japan. The tumulus has a rich history, but a 1596 earthquake caused damage to the mound. Today, Imashirozuka Kofun Tumulus is a vibrant public park, the perfect place to learn about Japan’s history and enjoy a serene stroll through the manicured grounds.
