“Faith” whispers the name Imani. Imani Baptist Church of Christ stands before you a testament to unwavering belief. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living story etched in stained glass and echoing in hymns.
Imani meaning faith in Swahili embodies the church’s diverse heritage. In December 1992 more than seventy adults and children signed the charter. They were children of Mother Africa and children of God. Their faith formed the cornerstone of this community.
The church’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. In 2002 Imani welcomed its first Associate Pastor Minister Michele Teague. A gifted preacher she served as pastoral assistant and Dean of the Imani Bible Institute. She also established the LEAH ministry a beacon of love encouragement acceptance and hope.
Pastor Teague became Senior Pastor in 2005 after the founding Pastor answered a call to serve elsewhere. She married Deacon Sylvester Humphrey who became the First Man of Imani Church. Together they expanded the church’s outreach. They started a Thanksgiving Community Meal an annual tradition. A food pantry feeding hundreds of families emerged. The Clothed in His Love ministry provided clothing to those in need. Their work extended beyond the church walls to homeless shelters and prisons.
Growth spurred the In God We Build Capital Campaign in 2014. This campaign sought to construct a new sanctuary to accommodate the expanding congregation. The church’s faith-based initiatives extended beyond its walls. Imani Scholars Incorporated a non-profit supports a preschool and day care center.
