Gazing down Im Moore, a quiet street in Hanover’s Nordstadt, one might overlook its rich history. Im Moore is more than just a street. It’s a time capsule. Its name, first mentioned in 1750, whispers tales of a bygone era. This street began not as a bustling avenue, but as a humble garden path around 1770, used by the “Gartenkosaken”. These gardeners tended the extensive lands of the Brauns family, a prominent Hanoverian family who owned land “im sogenannten Moore” (in the so-called moor). The Brauns family cultivated the area into the largest horticultural business in Northern Germany by the 19th century. Im Moore also witnessed architectural transformations. In 1881, Wilhelm Orgelmann, an architect and city council member, constructed his own grand villa at number 24. This striking brick building, designed in the Neo-Gothic style, stands as the oldest surviving structure on Im Moore. The street became a hub of commerce, housing the headquarters of Nebgen-Buden starting in 1892. Later, prominent residents like Kaufmann Albert Wolff, co-owner of the Berliner Warenhaus Gebrüder Wolff department store, called Im Moore home. Even the renowned baking powder company, Meine & Liebig, established its headquarters at number 37a in 1911. Im Moore also played a role in the everyday lives of Nordstadt residents. Across from the Lutherkirche stands the Anna-Siemsen-Schule, originally a girls’ school and public bathhouse. Before private bathrooms were common, residents frequented this “Nordstädter Badehaus” for their weekly baths. Im Moore showcases Hanover’s architectural and social history, from a garden path to a vibrant street reflecting the city’s growth.
