Ilsandong-gu was created on May 16, 2005. Before that, it was part of Ilsan-gu. Ilsan-gu was divided into two districts. Ilsandong means east of Ilsan. Ilsanseo means west.

Ilsandong-gu is divided into eleven neighborhoods. These are called “dong” in Korean. Siksa-dong is one of these neighborhoods. Jungsan-dong is another. Pungsan-dong and Baekseok-dong are also part of Ilsandong-gu. Madu-dong is also there. Janghang-dong and Gobong-dong are also included.

Ilsandong-gu has some interesting attractions. Lake Park is a famous spot. It is the largest artificial lake in Asia. The lake covers about 72.9 acres. That’s around 295,000 square meters. People can enjoy many activities there. There are roads for walking. There are paths for bicycles. You can even go inline skating. Jogging is also popular.

The Goyang Aram Complex is between Lake Park and Jeongbalsan mountain. This theater can seat 1,887 people. It is the only wind-pipe concert hall north of the Han River with over 1,000 seats.

Ilsandong-gu has many educational institutions. There are 33 schools. These include 19 elementary schools. There are 6 middle schools. There are 7 high schools. There is also one special school. Baengma is known for its many “hagwons” or cram schools. Many hagwons operate here.

The National Cancer Center of Korea is located in Ilsan. This is in the Baekseok neighborhood.
