Hidden within Ilsan’s industrial landscape lies a powerhouse. The Ilsan Combined Heat & Power Plant. This isn’t just any power plant. It’s a marvel of engineering. The Ilsan Combined Heat & Power Plant began operations in December 1993. Since then, it has quietly powered a significant portion of the region. The plant is a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) facility. This means it uses both gas and steam turbines to generate electricity, maximizing efficiency. This makes it a cogeneration plant, also known as a combined heat and power plant. The Ilsan Combined Heat & Power Plant generates both electricity and useful heat. The plant has a total capacity of 900 MW. It’s owned and operated by Korea East-West Power, a subsidiary of Korea Electric Power Corp. The construction of the Ilsan Combined Heat & Power Plant was a multi-phase project. GS E&C played a crucial role, providing engineering, procurement, and construction services. The plant incorporates technology from world-renowned companies. Siemens provided the steam turbines and SGT6-3000E gas turbines. BRUSH Turbogenerators and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries supplied the electric generators for different phases of the project. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries also contributed the steam boilers. In a single year, the Ilsan Combined Heat & Power Plant generated a staggering 3,916,000 MWh of electricity. This immense output underscores its importance in meeting the energy demands of the surrounding area. The Ilsan Combined Heat & Power Plant stands as a testament to South Korea’s advanced technological capabilities in power generation.
