Conceded in 1672 Ile Bourdon boasts a rich history. This small island in the Saint Lawrence River holds a significant place in Montreal’s past. Ile Bourdon’s name honors Jean Bourdon a renowned engineer. He created the first maps of Quebec City and its surroundings. The island’s low-lying land is 1.3 kilometers long. It was granted to Jean-Baptiste Legardeur de Repentigny. This happened after an agreement between Legardeur and Charles-Joseph d’Ailleboust des Musseaux. The agreement ensured the territory became part of the Seigneury of L’Assomption. Ile Bourdon had already been known by that name. Its southern neighbor would later be called Ile Bonfoin. In 1677 the island was identified as Saint-Pierre. This was in the Seigneury’s aveu and denombrement. Beaucanel and Buchanan also later used that name. However Ile Bourdon kept its original name. Today Ile Bourdon connects to Montreal and Repentigny. This is thanks to the Le Gardeur Bridge. The Exo 5 Mascouche line uses the Laurier railway bridge. It crosses the Rivière des Prairies going over the island. Ile Bourdon is more than just a geographical landmark. It stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Jean Bourdon. His engineering prowess shaped the early development of Quebec. Ile Bourdon’s quiet presence offers a glimpse into Montreal’s fascinating past. It’s a place where history quietly unfolds. It’s a reminder of the individuals who shaped the city we know today.
