Wild asparagus once thrived here. This is Île aux Asperges a small island in the St Lawrence River. Part of the Hochelaga Archipelago it’s one of seventeen islands protected by the Nature Conservancy of Canada. The NCC acquired Île aux Asperges in Varennes many years after their first project in Quebec. That first project was Île aux Moutons in 1978.

Île aux Asperges is a significant natural area. It’s rich in biodiversity. The island is home to various plants and animals. Some are endangered species like the copper redhorse a fish found only in Quebec. It’s a crucial habitat for birds. Short-eared owls bobolinks and bank swallows all call Île aux Asperges home.

The island’s name is a testament to its history. It was once known as Île McDuff. Old maps referred to it as Îles aux Esparges. A geographer named Benoït Brouillette explained the name change. He said that Esparges is an old name for asparagus. Wild asparagus used to grow abundantly on the island. This is why it is named Île aux Asperges.

Today Île aux Asperges is a haven for nature lovers. The NCC has created walking trails and observation platforms. These make the island accessible to the public by non-motorized boats. Respect for the environment is key. Rules are in place to protect the delicate ecosystem. No fires no camping no dogs and importantly no littering. Take your trash with you.

Île aux Asperges isn’t just a beautiful spot. It’s a symbol of conservation efforts. The island serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting our natural heritage. The Nature Conservancy of Canada and partners have worked hard to preserve it. The peaceful beauty of Île aux Asperges is just minutes from Montreal.
