The Semaforo itself is a testament to Isravele’s dedication. He completely renovated it adorning the structure with mosaics. He used fragments of glass bottles and seashells. It’s not just aesthetically pleasing. It’s a tribute to God and creation. Religious inscriptions and scenes decorate the interior. The six-pointed star a symbol of Judaism is everywhere.
Isravele’s life isn’t entirely isolated. He welcomes hikers and curious visitors to his sanctuary. He even travels to Partanna to get supplies. The Semaforo is perched atop Monte Gallo in Palermo’s Capo Gallo Nature Reserve. It sits at over 500 meters above sea level. To reach it park on Via Tolomea and hike up. You can drive partway up Via del Semaforo but parking is limited.
The hike itself is easy. It takes about an hour to an hour and a half. The path is well-marked. Follow Isravele’s red painted stones near the top. Wear hiking shoes and a hat for sun protection.
