Rebuilt in 1456, Ikkyuji Temple stands before us. It’s a place revived by the witty Zen master, Ikkyu Sojun. He is a figure loved by the Japanese people. The temple is not just a building. It’s a repository of history and culture.

Ikkyuji Temple’s story begins long before Ikkyu. Daiou-Kokushi founded it as Myosho-ji. He was a high priest who’d returned from China. The temple served as a Zen training monastery. War devastated it. Ikkyu, a sixth-generation disciple, restored it. He renamed it Shuon-an to honor his master.

Ikkyu Zenshi spent much of his life here. Even as abbot of Daitokuji Temple, he stayed at Shuon-an. Today, it’s known as Ikkyuji Temple, closely tied to Ikkyu Zenshi.

Look around and notice the architecture. Ikkyuji Temple has seven halls. Maeda Toshitsune, a feudal lord, donated them. Traditional materials like cypress bark are used in the roofing. The temple even experiments with titanium. This fuses ancient techniques with Japanese technology.

Step into the Hojo Garden. It is a designated place of scenic beauty. The North Garden re-imagines Mount Horai. This is a mythological mountain. The East Garden displays stones representing Buddhism’s defenders. The South Garden evokes the sea with lush greenery.

Ikkyuji Temple offers more than just visual beauty. You can savor shojin vegetarian cuisine here. Buddhist monks traditionally eat this. Enjoy dishes like Shojin Tenshin and Shojin Makunouchi. Ikkyuji Temple’s original natto is a popular souvenir. The chief priest traditionally makes this fermented soybean dish.

Consider Ikkyu’s influence on Japanese culture. He popularized natto. It is a dish still known as Ikkyuji natto. It’s made by priests for generations. Ikkyu also influenced the tea ceremony. He and Jyuko Murata shared strong links. Jyuko is said to have discovered Zen in tea.

Notice the many maple trees on the grounds. Each season brings unique beauty. You can see fresh greenery in spring. Colorful foliage appears in autumn.

Imagine cultural figures gathering here. People like Murata Juko and Konparu Zenchiku visited. They shaped modern Japanese culture. The tea ceremony and Noh theater have roots here.

Don’t miss the wooden statue of Ikkyu Sojun. A disciple made it during Ikkyu’s final year. It’s said to contain Ikkyu’s hair. Writings from Ikkyu and items used by emperors are also housed here.

Ikkyuji Temple stands as a testament to history. It reflects the beauty of Zen Buddhism. It embodies the spirit of Ikkyu Sojun. As you leave, remember the wit and wisdom that echoes through these halls.
