Have you ever wondered about a city nestled amidst breathtaking greenery and the clean waters of a flowing river? Ikeda, located in northern Osaka Prefecture, is just such a place. Ikeda has a rich history as a center of politics, economy, and culture in the Hokusetsu region. Right here, where we stand, imagine the city evolving from ancient times, once known as “Kureha no Sato.” Traces of this name still linger in local place names and the names of ancient shrines and temples scattered throughout Ikeda. During the Heian period, a landed estate named Kurehanoshō was established here. The name transitioned to “Ikeda” around the end of the Kamakura period. Did you know Ikeda even had its own castle? Ikeda Castle, home to the Settsu Ikeda clan, was built during the Nanboku-chō period. Sadly, it was abandoned after Araki Murashige defeated the Ikeda clan in 1574. He then moved the castle to Itami. During the Edo Period, Ikeda was renowned for its high-quality charcoal, known as “Ikeda-zumi.” This charcoal was highly prized for use in the traditional tea ceremony, and it continues to be valued even today. Ikeda transformed into a commuter town thanks to the Hankyu Railway. Interestingly, the railway’s founder, Kobayashi Ichizo (Itsuo), was an Ikeda resident and major landowner. Ikeda officially became a city on April 29, 1939. Ikeda is also home to several major companies. Daihatsu has had a presence here since the late 1930s, establishing their main office in the 1960s. Hankyu Hanshin Holdings and other Hankyu-affiliated companies also have headquarters here. This tranquil city offers cultural treasures as well. The Itsuō Art Museum houses the Itsuo Collection of Japanese art, much of which is related to the tea ceremony. If you’re interested in theater, the Ikeda Bunko holds collections on the Takarazuka theater and other Hankyu Dentetsu materials. Ikeda is easily accessible from Osaka. It’s just a 20-minute train ride from Umeda Station on the Hankyu Takarazuka Line.
