Can you imagine attending classes in a hallway? This was the reality for students at IGS Linden Sek. II in the 1970s. IGS Linden Sek. II, Hanover’s oldest integrated Gesamtschule, opened its doors on August 1, 1971. It quickly became popular for its unique all-day schooling model. Initially, IGS Linden shared its building with the Pestalozzischule. However, its growing popularity led to overcrowding. Space became so limited that classes were sometimes held in the entrance hall, the same area used for serving meals. The school expanded to a new building on Mühlenberg in 1975, sharing it with IGS Mühlenberg. This required students, most of whom lived in Linden and Limmer, to take buses provided by the city. The move was met with protests. The press frequently referred to this period as the school’s “exile.” IGS Linden returned to its renovated Linden location in 1977. The former Humboldtschule building on Beethovenstraße became home to the upper secondary level (Sek. II) in 1981. This is where we stand now, at the IGS Linden Sek. II. Today, IGS Linden Sek. II continues to offer all secondary school qualifications without requiring students to change schools. All levels learn together in a diverse and inclusive setting. This building on Beethovenstraße, once the Humboldtschule Gymnasium, has witnessed generations of students preparing for their futures. It serves as a testament to the IGS Linden’s commitment to providing a comprehensive education.
