Established in 1911, the IGS Herder has a captivating story to tell. Originally a higher girls’ school, it aimed to provide advanced education for girls beyond elementary school. The IGS Herder stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of education. Located in Frankfurt’s Ostend district, the IGS Herder witnessed significant changes throughout the 20th century. During the Third Reich, it was designated a “Deutsche Oberschule.” After World War II, it transitioned into a girls’ gymnasium. A pivotal moment came in the 1968/69 school year when IGS Herder embraced co-education, welcoming both boys and girls. Despite its rich history, declining enrollment led to the school’s closure in 2005. However, this was not the end for the IGS Herder. It was reborn as an integrated comprehensive school, initially as a branch of IGS Nordend, and later gaining its independence in 2008. Today, the IGS Herder carries the legacy of Johann Gottfried Herder, the renowned poet, philosopher, and theologian. The school emphasizes personal development, encouraging students to pursue their learning interests through independent action and collaboration. In 2023, the 8th grade students at IGS Herder participated in the “Making Challenge Simple” program. They embarked on two-week projects outside of school, tackling challenges based on their strengths and passions. From working with animals to collecting donations and embarking on adventurous trips, these young people left their comfort zones and discovered new strengths. The IGS Herder remains committed to fostering self-efficacy and resilience in its students. Empowering them to become strong, capable individuals ready to shape their own futures.
