This magnificent structure occupies a 10,000-square-meter plot, boasting a spacious 1,800 square meters interior. It can hold up to 2,000 people. In 1988, Indonesian President Soeharto inaugurated the Igreza Catedral da Imaculada Conceição. It was hailed as the largest cathedral in Southeast Asia. A year later, in October 1989, Pope John Paul II blessed the cathedral, solidifying its place as a spiritual center. The Igreza Catedral da Imaculada Conceição played a pivotal role in Timor-Leste’s fight for independence. Bishop Belo, a Nobel laureate, used the cathedral as a platform to guide the people.
