Gazing at the Igreja Paroquial de Tabuado, imagine stepping back to the 12th century. Picture the reign of D. Afonso Henriques. This monarch defined the boundaries of the “couto” of Tabuado. He granted this privileged area to Gosendo Álvares, linking the church to the very birth of the Portuguese nation. The Igreja Paroquial de Tabuado stands as a testament to this rich history. Its oldest sections date back to the second half of the 12th and early 13th centuries. These stones whisper tales of the Romanesque era. They provide a glimpse into the region’s artistic landscape during the monarchy’s infancy. The church boasts a modest design, with a single nave and a rectangular chancel. The main portal, slightly recessed, features three archivolts adorned with half-spheres. An outer frame boasts a checkered pattern. Notice the smooth tympanum resting on imposing animal-shaped corbels. These figures act as guardians of the entrance. Above, a rose window, pierced by seven circular openings in a radial pattern, commands attention. On the south side, a simpler portal echoes the western design. Inside, the recessed triumphal arch stands out. Later additions include the stone tower. It serves as the bell tower, with its double pointed arch, and is attached to the northern side of the main façade. During the late Middle Ages, mural paintings graced the interior walls. Remnants of these paintings, depicting Christ, Saint John the Baptist, and Saint James, can still be seen on the chancel’s back wall. The 17th century brought significant changes to the Igreja Paroquial de Tabuado. The patrons, the Correias de Montenegro family, established the Chapel of Jesus. During the Baroque period, gilded altars filled the interior, largely preserved thanks to careful restoration efforts in the mid-20th century.
