Is it possible for a church to be reborn? Yes. The Igreja Paroquial de Matosinhos stands before us. It is more than just a religious building. It is a testament to faith art and history.

The Igreja Paroquial de Matosinhos is also known as the Igreja do Bom Jesus. It is a beacon for pilgrims and a place of celebration. This church has been classified as a Public Interest Property since 1982.

Let us journey back to the 16th century. The church already existed then. But the 18th century brought significant changes. The Igreja Paroquial de Matosinhos was completely renovated. It gained an elegant Baroque style thanks to the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni. Work began in 1743. It was funded by emigrants who had made fortunes in Brazil. Also, offerings from sailors facing hardship contributed.

The facade is large and rhythmic. Pilasters and a strong entablature define it. It balances structural equilibrium with exuberant Baroque decoration. Three portals mark the entrance. The central one is the largest. Niches hold statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Imposing bell towers stand to the sides. A large surrounding churchyard adds to its grandeur.

Inside the Igreja Paroquial de Matosinhos there are three naves. Five 16th-century arches separate them. They rest on Ionic columns. A 17th-century wooden ceiling with coffers covers the space. The main chapel features a golden carved altarpiece. It marks a transition between national and Joanine styles. Luís Pereira da Costa from Porto designed it.

The altarpiece holds the image of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos. Dating from the 12th or 13th century it is one of Portugal’s oldest crucifixes. It has been an object of strong devotion since the Middle Ages. Sculptures by Thomé Velho flank the revered image. These depict Joseph of Arimathea Nicodemus the Virgin Mary and Saint John.

In the transept look at the golden carved altarpieces. They are in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament and the Lord of Passos. Domingos Martins Moreira and José da Mota Manso created these between 1746 and 1750.

The side chapels hold Baroque altarpieces. Domingos Martins Moreira carved these in the mid-18th century. José da Mota Manso gilded them. He also created the beautiful pulpits. Manuel da Costa Andrade crafted the window canopies and balconies between 1753 and 1754. Rocaille details appear on four backrest benches. José Teixeira de Guimarães made these in 1772.

In the high choir stands the historic organ. It has a northern European style. Michael Hensberg a Dutch organ builder constructed it in 1685. It was originally for the Monastery of Lóios in Porto. Later it was moved to this Igreja Paroquial de Matosinhos. José António dos Santos remodeled it in 1859. In 1992 the Oficina e Escola de Organária de Esmoriz restored it. They aimed to restore its original features. It has 10 stops some whole and some divided on a single manual.

The Igreja Paroquial de Matosinhos continues to evolve. Conservation work reveals unknown architectural features. Six windows above the wooden coffers have appeared. Identifying these elements is essential. It enhances our understanding of the 16th-century church.

As we leave the Igreja Paroquial de Matosinhos remember its layers of history. Its art and its enduring faith make it a treasure for all who visit.
